Are We Doing Enough?

It's 2.26am, 29th January 2009. It's almost 5 hours after Earth Hour 2009 and I'm spending this eventful hour in my hometown of Teluk Intan. I spent 15 minutes in my house, approximately 10-15 minutes driving from my house to McD's where I'm supposed to meet my friend at 9.00pm (I'm supposed to meet them there, with or without Earth Hour) and another 30 minutes eating Fillet O'Fish at McD's

I started turning off most of the lights in my house at 8.25pm. By 8.40pm, I was scolded by my grandma for turning off literally all the lights in the house :(  So much for the Earth Hour spirit. I just kept quiet out of respect for her since she doesn't know about 'earthly' matters.

Since I had so much free time, I decided to leave home early for McD's. As I drove to McD's from my house, I was sightseeing and looking at the response to Earth Hour 2009 in my hometown of Teluk Intan. All I could say is that all the publicity of Earth Hour FAILED!! Most of the houses that I passed by did not turn off their lights. Even the Petronas gas kiosk nearest to my house did not turn off any lights. Now, I'm praying very hard that they were indeed using the lights that they turned on.

When I arrived at McD's, I was pretty much stunned by what I saw. McD's is operating as usual. If I'm not mistaken, McD's is supposed to participate in Earth Hour 2009 and yet, not one unnecessary light was turned off. Now, McD's sounds like it's trying to get public attention by having its US-based operations join Earth Hour 2009 while its Teluk Intan operations continue as usual. When I was sitting alone in McD's eating my Fillet O'Fish, this one particular question came to my mind:

Are We Doing Enough?
After this question came to my mind, I started to recall certain awful events that happened to Mother Nature.
  1. A friend of mine who sometimes talks about going green ALWAYS 'da bao' food from the cafeteria in University
  2. Green Club organizing a Food Fair in campus but the food stalls there sell food in styrofoam plates, containers and plastic spoons. To top it off, I see a garbage bin FULL with styrofoam plates and containers
  3. I ate from a styrofoam container last morning :(   I'm feeling guilty right now
With Earth Hour being the main buzz in town (actually it's on Earth), we certainly need to do something to rejuvenate OUR Earth.
